Warnock in for Baines as Capello keeps faith with defence

In a primarily familiar final 23-man squad, the most notable defensive absentee in Fabio Capello’s England World Cup party is left-back Leighton Baines, who has been omitted in favour of Stephen Warnock.

Baines was considered to have played himself out of contention after a particularly nervy performance in England’s shoddy friendly win over Mexico.

Warnock will bring greater physicality to the squad, and his pace may prove to be an asset to the team should he be called upon if first-choice left-back Ashley Cole is unavailable.

Another defender to miss out is Michael Dawson. The Tottenham player was unused by Capello in the friendly matches and remains uncapped.

And with Gareth Barry facing a last-minute fitness test, holding midfielders Scott Parker and Tom Huddlestone will have been optimistic of making the final 23.

Both players’ hopes were dashed, however, as Barry was passed fit and Capello opted for Michael Carrick as a potential replacement for the Manchester City midfielder.

Defensive cover has proved somewhat of a headache for Capello, but the manager’s worries will be eased by the fact that he has a settled starting backline.

Doubts persist about England’s defence, as they have gone four games without keeping a clean sheet and it is unclear who will start in goal.

What is certain, however, is that John Terry and Rio Ferdinand will play at the heart of defence, and should these two perform to their full capabilities, England would be a tempting bet at 16/1 not to concede a goal throughout the entire tournament.
