England vs Pakistan – Prodigious Aamer makes further inroads

| 29.07.2010

Mohammad Aamer picked up where he left off before lunch, by taking another wicket to restrict England to 190/4 at tea.

That score was looking unlikely when the 18-year-old took his third wicket of the day to dismiss Jonathan Trott lbw and put England on 118/4.

A 72-run partnership between steady hand Paul Collingwood and explosive hitter Eoin Morgan followed, though, and England will feel the scales have tipped back in their favour.

England are 4/7 to win the Test at Trent Bridge.

Mohammad Asif had gotten rid of Kevin Pietersen for just nine with a good-length delivery just outside off stump. The ball kept straight and found Pietersen’s inside edge before crashing into the top of middle stump.

Aamer then had Trott walking after the South-African born batsman padded up to a ball angled across him. Tony Hill raised the finger but Trott asked for his second review of the day, only for HawkEye to show that it was pitching in line and clipping the top off of stump.

That brought Eoin Morgan to the crease and prompted the 23-year-old to show what he can do. He is 5/6 to score more than 74.5 runs in this innings.

Unquestioned for his inventive shots in the short form of the game, observers wondered whether Morgan had the patience in Test cricket. But he soon began playing trademark reverse sweeps and big drives.

The Dubliner moved on to 44 from 76 deliveries at tea, ably supported by Collingwood, who also produced some fine shots. The Durham man was at 27 at tea.

Collingwood is 5/6 to score more than 57.5 runs.

Looking ahead to the Pakistan innings, the conditions look like Jimmy Anderson will find most joy, and he is the 5/2 joint favourite to take the most first-innings wickets.
