Pakistan vs Australia – Watson strikes to give Aussies huge lead

Published:

Shane Watson became the first bowler to etch his name on Lord’s new honours board as Australia dismantled Pakistan’s inexperienced batting to take control of the first Test.

Watson finished with figures of five for 40 as Pakistan crashed to 148 all out – 105 runs behind Australia’s first innings total of 253.

The Australia opener is now 5/6 to score more than 56.5 runs in his second innings.

Lord’s introduced a new honours board for neutral Test matches ahead of this game, which is being played at the home of cricket because of concerns over the security situation in Pakistan.

Pakistan had bowled themselves into a strong position when Mohammad Aamer wrapped up the Australian innings for 253 this morning with his fourth wicket.

But Salman Butt was left to plough a lone furrow before he was bowled by Watson for a stylish 63 as Pakistan collapsed, losing nine wickets for just 103 runs.

Australia are 1/12 to win the Test match.

Watson tore the heart out of Pakistan’s middle order, trapping both Umar Akmal and Kamran Akmal lbw before accounting for Shahid Afridi and Butt.

Afridi, the Pakistan captain, was playing his first Test match in four years and treated the occasion like a Twenty20 game – blasting 31 from 15 balls in an electric cameo.

But Watson had him caught at deep mid-off before wrapping up the Pakistan innings – and claiming his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket – by having Danish Kaneria caught in the slips.

Pakistan were all out for a measly 148 and will now, with Australia on 51/0, need their bowlers to produce some magic and get Simon Katich out for less than 57.5 (a 5/6 shot).

Ricky Ponting is on 11,928 Test match runs and Ladbrokes are offering the special price of Evens on the Australia captain to pass the 12,000 mark in his second innings at Lord’s. See the full Pakistan v Australia match betting market.
