Afellay to bolster Fiorentina’s hopes of Serie A title challenge

| 27.08.2010

Fiorentina are pinning their hopes on creative midfielder Ibrahim Afellay to inspire them to a vastly improved season in Serie A this year.

Sinisa Mihajlovic is preparing for his first season as manager at the Viola following his summer appointment from Catania and has his sights set on bettering the performance of last season when Fiorentina could only finish 11th.

A number of big names from across Europe have been linked with a move to the club, with PSV Eindhoven star Afellay at the head of their wanted list.

Afellay only has a year remaining on his contract in Holland and will be free to negotiate a future transfer in six months’ time.

PSV are reluctant to lose the 24-year-old for nothing and are said to have received an offer of €11m from Fiorentina, which meets their valuation.

Having failed to qualify for any European competition, Fiorentina are able to focus all of their time on challenging for Serie A glory and are 33/1 to win the league.

Other names that have been rumoured to be wanted by Mihajlovic are Bayern Munich defender Martin Demechelis, Atletico Madrid’s Tomas Ujfalusi and Wigan’s Charles N’Zogbia.

They kick-off their Serie A season at home to Napoli and are 6/5 to claim the three points.

It was Napoli who won the corresponding fixture last season when Christian Maggio netted the only goal two minutes from time, but Fiorentina’s firepower, which includes Alberto Gilardino, should ensure no repeat occurs.

Three of the last five meetings at the Stadio Artemio Franchi have finished 2-1, with Fiorentina 8/1 to win by this scoreline. View the whole correct score market.
