Francesco Molinari guaranteed starting spot in Ryder Cup team

| 27.08.2010

Francesco Molinari will become the first Italian since Constantino Rocca to feature in the Ryder Cup after Ross McGowan pulled out of the Johnnie Walker Championship with a shoulder problem.

Molinari, who is seventh in the Ryder Cup standings, cannot be denied his debut now that McGowan is out of the final counting event.

Despite not needing a result at Gleneagles, Molinari has started strongly, four under after his first round, and is 5/1 favourite to enter the Ryder Cup high in confidence.

Molinari will become only the second Italian to make the Ryder Cup team but will be hoping his older brother, Edoardo, can convince Colin Montgomerie that his form is good enough to warrant one of the European captain’s wildcard picks.

Edoardo, 25/1, to win at Gleneagles this week, has six victories in his last 18 months and is a popular pick amongst the players on tour for a wildcard but is up against some stern opposition in Paul Casey, Padraig Harrington and Justin Rose.

If Edoardo is lucky enough to be selected, the siblings will make history by becoming the first brothers to appear on the same Ryder Cup team.

Europe are 4/7 to win the Ryder Cup at the Celtic Manor Resort in October, and with two Major champions in Graeme McDowell and Martin Kaymer, the European side is looking very strong to regain the cup after tasting defeat at Valhalla in 2008.

Francesco Molinari will be boosted in the knowledge of his first Ryder Cup start and can be the victor in Scotland this week. See the full Johnnie Walker Championship golf betting market here.
