History dictates that Chelsea will win on penalties

If recent history is anything to go by, then a Community Shield winning start to the season is a pretty decent omen.

The last three Premier League campaigns have been won by the side that claimed the first piece of silverware on offer.

As things stand, the holders, Chelsea, are the marginal favourites to come out on top, with odds of 7/5, compared to United’s 15/8 – even though only once in the last ten years has this cup been successfully defended (by Man United in 2007 and 2008).

Of the 17 winners in the Premier League era, 11 of them have been the reigning Premier League champions. Hence, trends would suggest that this one is Chelsea’s to lose.

Even so, a draw at 90 minutes could make for an interesting flutter, with extremely tempting odds of 23/10

The last three Community Shields have been decided on penalties, as have three of the four Chelsea/Man United encounters in this match.
