Hodgson targets Toivonen and Salcido to bolster Liverpool’s squad

| 23.08.2010

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has not finished his summer spending as yet and is ready to step up his interest in PSV Eindhoven duo Ola Toivonen and Carlos Salcido.

Toivonen has made a blistering start to the Eredivisie season by scoring five goals in three games to help fire PSV to the top of the table.

It is believed that Hodgson has already tabled a £9m bid for the Swede as he looks to increase his options in attack to cover for the injury prone Fernando Torres.

Hodgson was also in attendance when Toivonen found the target in Sweden’s recent 3-0 victory over Scotland in Stockholm.

David N’Gog has proved a hit in the loan striker role already this season, with goals in the qualifying stages of the Europa League and the opening strike in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal during the first weekend of the Premier League season.

However, Torres is expected to be fit to face Manchester City tonight and is 11/8 to score at any time against Liverpool’s rivals for a top-four finish this season.

Meanwhile, Salcido would fill the shortage of options Hodgson has at left-back as he looks to challenge both domestically and in the Europa League.

Daniel Agger was employed in the position against Arsenal, while Fabio Aurelio re-signed for the club just weeks after being released on a free transfer.

Hodgson has already wasted little time in adding Joe Cole, Milan Jovanovic and Christian Poulsen to his squad, with Liverpool 14/1 to win the Premier League this season.

They are 9/1 to land success in the Europa League, with Hodgson having led Fulham to the final of the tournament last season before losing to Atletico Madrid.

Liverpool are 2/1 to win away at Manchester City. See the whole Manchester City vs Liverpool Match Betting odds.
