Liverpool vs Arsenal – Gunners out to fire title warning shot

Published:

Arsenal are 6/1 to win the Premier League this season, and their title credentials will be given a thorough examination when they face Liverpool on Sunday (kick-off 4.00pm).

Anfield is as testing an arena as Arsene Wenger could hope for as a starting point, but history suggests that the Gunners have an excellent chance of kick-starting their campaign with three points.

Arsenal have won their last three matches against Liverpool, with two 2-1 victories and a 1-0 triumph at the Emirates earlier in 2010.

In the corresponding fixture last season, Arsenal were 2-1 winners at Anfield, and a repeat victory for the Gunners is priced at 10/1.

Andrey Arshavin scored the winner on that occasion, and the Russian is available at 9/4 to score at any time on Sunday.

Arshavin appeared to be in excellent form in pre-season, forming a potentially lethal understanding with new Arsenal forward Marouane Chamakh, who is 6/1 to mark his official debut with the opening goal.

Historically, this is a hard-fought fixture, with Liverpool claiming 65 wins and Arsenal 63, while there have been 45 draws in the 173 matches between them.

Liverpool begin the match as 7/5 favourites to win, and they will be boosted by new signings Joe Cole and Christian Poulsen, who could both start in midfield.

Even more important for the hosts, however, is the fact that key players Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres have decided to stay at Anfield.

Torres has recovered from a groin injury he sustained at the World Cup, but he expected to be named on the bench. The Spaniard is 6/5 to score at any time.

Who do you think will break the deadlock? Robin Van Persie is 5/1 to score first. See the full Liverpool vs Arsenal Match Betting Odds market.
