Marseille target Fabiano to fire them to Champions League glory

| 10.08.2010

Marseille’s quest to land a big-name striker to increase their chances of challenging in the Champions League have taken them in the direction of Luis Fabiano of Sevilla.

The 29-year-old Brazilian, who scored three goals at the World Cup, has been on the radar of clubs including Tottenham and Manchester United during the close season and is in high demand as he only has one year left on his contract in Spain.

However, it is the reigning French Ligue 1 champions Marseille who have moved to the head of the queue and are considering a €13m bid.

Marseille are currently 50/1 to win the Champions League and have also been linked with Fiorentina’s Alberto Gilardino as another striker option.

Meanwhile, Raul Meireles from Porto has been touted as a target to bolster the midfield, alongside Bordeaux’s French international Alou Diarra.

But with funds believed to be tight, any new arrival could hinge on whether a deal is accepted for Senegalese forward Mamadou Niang.

The 30-year-old has stated his desire to embark on a fresh challenge and interest has been rife from Turkish giants Fenerbahce in terms of completing a deal.

Marseille claimed their first French league title since 1992 when fending off the challenge of Lyon last season and are 9/4 to land back-to-back championships.

Lyon are the 7/4 favourites to win Ligue 1, with Bordeaux 5/1 and Lille 8/1.

Auxerre finished third in Ligue 1 last season, just seven points behind Marseille, and are 25/1 to win the title for only the second time in their history.
