Omens encouraging for McIlroy on final day of US PGA
Published:Rory McIlroy starts the final round of the US PGA Championship as the 3/1 second favourite to win his first ever major and history suggests he has every chance of overhauling Nick Watney’s three-shot lead.
In both 2008 and 2009, the man who started the final day as leader was overhauled and forced to settle for second, and despite twice finishing in the top three at majors before, this is the closest the Northern Irishman has ever been to the lead on the Sunday.
If the 21-year-old succeeds, he will be the first British winner of the US PGA, whereas 6/4 favourite Watney is bidding to deliver the 11th American success in 15 years.
The Californian has also never before claimed a major, though this has been his most successful year yet, finishing seventh at the US Masters in Augusta and coming joint-seventh at the Open Championship last month.
The other serious contender this evening is Dustin Johnson at 4/1. The 26-year-old tees off level with McIlroy on ten under par, but saved his worst round for the final day when finishing in the top 20 at both the US Open and Open Championship earlier this year.
