Woods still fancied for USPGA after shocker in Ohio
Published:Tiger Woods may have just recorded the worst tournament score of his professional career at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, but there are numerous reasons as to why he still amongst the favourites in the betting for the USPGA Championship.
Woods is the 14/1 second favourite to triumph at the final major of the year and secure a fifth victory at the USPGA Championship, which begins on Thursday, despite having failed to land a PGA Tour title since demolishing the field by eight strokes at the BMW Championship last September.
The fact that Woods remains as the world’s number one player is good enough reason alone for his presence amongst the market leaders as there can be no argument that he will be virtually impossible to beat should he produce his best golf at Whistling Straits.
Meanwhile, Woods showed signs that his form was returning at the British Open last month, when explaining that it was the best he had driven from the tee in a long time.
His big Achilles heel so far this season has been his putting, but Woods would not be the first player to suddenly find some momentum on the greens after a spell of short game vexation.
The 34-year-old has also bounced back after troubled times in the past, having virtually remodelled his whole swing following his victory at the 1997 Masters.
Furthermore, Woods’ major record in 2010 has been relatively strong as he claimed a share of fourth at both the Masters and US Open and is 5/2 to finish in the top five again.
Phil Mickelson is the 12/1 favourite to add to his victory at the Masters this year, while Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell is 50/1 to land a second major following his success at the US Open.
Match betting is also an option at the USPGA Championsip with Woods considered an even-money chance to shoot a lower score than Mickelson.
