Watson seizes first round lead at WGC Bridgestone Invitational
Published:American Bubba Watson stormed into an early lead at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, shooting an impressive first round to move three shots clear at six under par.
The WGC Bridgestone Invitational is the last time the world’s leading players do battle until they meet at the US PGA Championship.
With this in mind, the Ohio-based PGA Tour event could be an useful indication as to how the players will fare at the US PGA major.
A highly competitive, wide open field meant that the first few in the clubhouse could only establish a slender lead after carding the first rounds.
Chad Campbell was one such player, and his strong early showing saw him move to three under par. The American is priced at 33/1 to win the tournament.
Watson, however, rocketed past his countryman, and four consecutive birdies between holes 11 and 14 gave him the lead. He is 10/1 to win the event.
Before the tournament began, a lot of bettors were backing South Korean player KJ Choi to do well in Ohio, and judging by his first round, the support seems justified.
Choi moved to two under par after 12 holes, and he was looking more than capable of mounting a serious challenge for the title. He is 33/1 to win the WGC Bridgestone Invitational.
Frenchman Gregory Bourdy also made an encouraging start, and his score of two under par after 15 holes may tempt bettors to back him at 66/1 to be victorious in Ohio.
