Aguero attempting to shake off ankle injury to face Barcelona

| 13.09.2010

Sergio Aguero is in line to make a quick recovery for Atletico Madrid to return to their starting 11 when they host Barcelona in their next La Liga game.

The Argentine striker was stretchered off with a leg injury in the second half of his team’s 2-1 victory at Athletic Bilbao as they sit on top of the table after winning both of their opening two games.

Atletico are 12/1 to win La Liga this season, but they will face their toughest challenge to date when Barcelona arrive at the Vicente Calderon, looking to make amends for their shock 2-0 home defeat against Hercules in their last outing.

The home side are 10/3 to heap more misery on Barcelona, while Pep Guardiola’s men are 8/11 to bounce back to winning ways.

Dr Jose Maria Villalon remains optimistic that Aguero’s injured ankle will sufficiently recover to line-up against the reigning La Liga champions.

He said on the Atletico website: “It’s very difficult, but we are going to step up the therapy so that he could make the game.

“It’s a possibility. At this moment it’s difficult, especially as it still hasn’t even been 24 hours since the injury occurred. However, right now we are not ruling him out for the game against Barcelona.”

However, Aguero will definitely not be included in Atletico’s first group game of the Europa League on Thursday as they begin the defence of the tournament they won last year.

Atletico are 12/1 to repeat last season’s victory and begin their Group B campaign with a trip to Greece to take on Aris.

They are 4/5 to open their campaign with a win and 10/11 to finish at the head of the group, which also contains Bayer Leverkusen and Rosenborg.

Barcelona are 4/5 to win La Liga despite their setback against Hercules. See the whole La Liga winners market.
