Chris Riggott is ready to impress the Bluebirds after securing trial
Published:Chris Riggott has been training with Cardiff City for the past few weeks after becoming a free agent, and with the deadline day departure of Anthony Gerrard, Riggott is hoping for a spot in the Cardiff squad.
The 30-year-old rose to prominence when partnering Gareth Southgate at the centre of Middlesbrough’s defence in the 2004/05, on one stage even being tipped for an England call-up.
Riggott had been at Middlesborough since 2003 but turned down an offer of a new contract at the end of last season in the hope that a change of club would bring better luck, after a string of niggling injuries has hampered his past three years.
Cardiff manager Dave Jones has been assessing Riggott’s performance closely, the man from Derbyshire has undergone a series of rigorous tests by the Cardiff backroom staff, and will make a decision soon on Riggott’s future at the club.
Riggott has the experience of playing in an UEFA Cup final against Sevilla in 2006 and Jones will hope that experience can strengthen the Cardiff defence as they go in search of promotion.
Cardiff are 9/2 to win the Championship, they currently sit second behind QPR, and after the coup of the transfer window in Craig Bellamy, they are certainly capable of improving on last year’s play-off final defeat.
Bellamy has started magnificently for Cardiff, scoring one and providing the club’s leading goalscorer, Jay Bothroyd, with plenty of chances as they both look to head the Championship scoring charts.
Bellamy is currently 5/1 to end the season top of the goal scoring charts, whereas Bothroyd, with four league goals in four games, is 10/1.
