Commitment needed at West Ham to avoid battle with relegation

Scott Parker believes that squad quality alone will not prevent West Ham facing a relegation battle this season and that the players stepping onto the pitch will need to display vast amounts of commitment.

West Ham finished just one place above the relegation zone last year and another season beating the drop looked on the cards as they were still without a point four games into the current campaign.

They picked up a useful point at Stoke in their last Premier League outing and Parker believes that more of the same commitment needs to be shown for the duration of the season to make a surge up the table.

He said: “It’s going to be a tough season for us. There’s no hiding the fact it’s going to be difficult.

“If we show commitment and desire we will certainly pick up results more than we won’t. We all know that in the Premier League, you can have as much quality as you want, but what you need is commitment and you need a real desire to win and go and beat teams.”

West Ham are 11/10 in the Premier League betting odds to be relegated to the Championship this season and they host Tottenham next as they continue their search for a first victory.

Avram Grant’s team are 5/2 to beat Spurs and would have received a confidence boost from their Carling Cup win at Sunderland.

However, West Ham have lost three of their last four home games against Tottenham, with the fixture providing the latest return to Upton Park for former Hammers boss Harry Redknapp.
