Furyk disqualification leads to PGA Tour suspending regulation
Published:Jim Furyk’s unfortunate mishap at the first event of the FedEx Cup play-offs recently has resulted in the PGA Tour changing its regulations for the remainder of the 2010 season.
Furyk was disqualified from The Barclays event after missing his pro-am tee time by five minutes as his alarm did not go off.
A number of other players thought the decision was on the harsh side as he was late for the pro-am and not the actual tournament and as a result the PGA Tour has suspended the rule for the season and pledged to review it in the future.
A PGA Tour statement indicated: “Should a player be late for his pro-am starting time, the situation will be handled as a matter of unbecoming conduct.
“Such player will be required to participate in the remainder of the pro-am round and may be required to perform additional sponsor activity.
“A player who misses his pro-am obligation in its entirety will still be ruled ineligible for the tournament unless he has been excused in accordance with the provisions of the regulations.”
Furyk slipped from third to eighth in the overall FedEx Cup standings because of his non-participation at The Barclays, but is 20/1 to bounce back in fine fashion with victory in the second of the four events in the play-off series, the Deutsche Bank Championship.
The 40-year-old is a two-time winner on the PGA Tour in 2010 from 18 tournaments and has a good record in the upcoming event in recent seasons through finishing seventh and eighth at TPC Boston in the past two years.
Furyk will play alongside Bubba Watson and Hunter Mahan in the opening round of the Deutsche Bank Championship and can be backed at 6/4 to shoot the lowest round of the three-ball over the opening 18 holes.
