Lee Westwood confirms he will be fit for the Ryder Cup
Published:As he sits at the top of the European and World points lists, Lee Westwood was always a certainty for a Ryder Cup spot, but the calf injury that forced Westwood to miss the US PGA Championship threatened to rule him out of the event.
His management company have today confirmed that Westwood will be fit to lead Europe into the Ryder Cup as they look to regain the trophy they relinquished in Valhalla 2008 – they are 8/13 to do so.
A spokesman for International Sports Management said “Lee will be at the Ryder Cup.
“He is a few days ahead of schedule and everything is progressing well, there have been no setbacks.
“He’s confident he will be ready, he was confident when he stopped playing last month that he would be.”
Westwood will play his first 18 holes on Friday before completing 36 holes the following Friday to make sure he is capable of playing two rounds in a day.
This will come as good news to Colin Montgomerie who is expected to use the experience of Lee Westwood to the fullest extent as he looks to the man from Worksop to guide the six European rookies through their first Ryder Cup.
Westwood is 8/1 to be the top European points scorer and his 14 wins in the Ryder Cup will put him in a good position.
It does mean bad news for Paul Casey though who would have been expected to fill in for Westwood had he not been able to make it.
Casey is in contention to win the FedEx Cup and after being controversially left out of the Ryder Cup side, will be out to prove that he deserved a place in the side.
