McLaren needs to beat Hannover to give himself some breathing space

Steve McClaren will need to turn things around quickly if he wants to enjoy a successful stint as manager of Wolfsburg, despite being told that his job is safe for the time being.

Hopes were high for a successful tenure at Wolfsburg for McClaren after he led FC Twente to their maiden Dutch title last season.

However, despite bringing in the likes of highly-rated defenders Simon Kjaer and Arne Friedrich, while maintaining the services of star striker Edin Dzeko, things have not started smoothly with three straight defeats to open the season.

Wolfsburg managing director Dieter Hoeness has admitted that the start is far from ideal if they want to win the Bundesliga, for which they are 33/1.

But he is prepared to give the first ever Englishman to manage in the Bundesliga a little more time to turn things around.

Hoeness told the Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper: “Certainly there are a few things which have gone unsatisfactorily, but I will not get the hammer out and start smashing things.

“The situation is certainly not critical. It would be wrong to start taking action. I have no doubt about the quality of our squad.”

McClaren is 1/2 to taste victory in his fourth Bundesliga game in charge as Wolfsburg host Hannover, who are flying high in fourth spot in the table after accruing seven points from their opening three games.

Dzeko has already scored three times in as many league games this season and found the target in a 4-2 home victory over Hannover during the last campaign, with a repeat of the scoreline priced at 40/1.

Meanwhile, Zviezdan Misimovic opened the scoring in both games as Wolfsburg did the double over Hannover, as they also won 1-0 in the away fixture.

Some 12 goals have been scored in Wolfsburg’s three games this season. See the whole Wolfsburg vs Hannover match betting market.
