Mclean not taking Peterborough starting berth for granted

Aaron Mclean has put his fine goalscoring start to the season down to the increasing competition for places at Peterborough.

Mclean has scored five league goals already this season in the opening six games to help fire Peterborough to the head of League One on goal difference from Carlisle.

Craig Mackail-Smith and George Boyd are others to be reliable sources of goals for Gary Johnson’s side, while Mclean has also been kept on his toes by Lee Tomlin and Dave Hibbert, with the latter scoring in the recent 5-2 win over Oldham.

Mclean said: “I am under pressure every time I set foot on to the pitch because we have a superb squad. The players waiting to come in will do a really good job and I believe I am thriving under that pressure.

“I know full well that I have to perform in every single game that I play because if I don’t I know that someone will come in and take my place in the side.”

Peterborough remain 5/1 to win League One despite their promising start to the season, with Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield the joint favourites at 7/2.

Meanwhile, Mclean is 7/1 to end the campaign as the division’s top scorer and will be handed the chance to add to his early tally when Peterborough travel to Exeter for their next game in League One.

Peterborough are 5/4 to take the three points despite losing two of their three away games in the league this season.

On the other hand, Exeter have not been beaten in their three League One home fixtures and are 2/1 to pick up the win and 5/2 to hold the leaders to a draw.
