Newcastle cannot avoid big guns in Carling Cup draw

| 25.09.2010

Newcastle have not been handed the greatest reward for knocking pre-tournament favourites Chelsea out of the Carling Cup as they face another of the Premier League’s big guns in Arsenal next.

Chris Hughton’s team claimed an unlikely 4-3 win at Stamford Bridge and at least can take note of the fact that they will be at home in round four.

Arsenal may not be so pleased as they have already had to win a tough away game in the Carling Cup when eliminating north London rivals Tottenham in the third round.

And although the draw has been relatively unkind to them again, they can take positives from having beaten Newcastle 2-0 on the last two occasions they have met in the Carling Cup.

Arsenal have beaten Newcastle in five of their last six meetings in all competitions and Arsene Wenger may again choose to pick an almost full strength team for the trip to St James’ Park.

Wenger’s team are 3/1 to win the Carling Cup, with Manchester United the other team featuring prominently in the betting.

The draw was much kinder to United as they will play at home to Wolves for a spot in the quarter finals and they remain the 2/1 favourites to win the Carling Cup.

The pair met in the third round of the competition last year when Sir Alex Ferguson’s team won 1-0 en route to winning the tournament.

West Ham host Stoke in the other all Premier League clash and will be the first showdown in the competition for the pair since 1990, when the Hammers won both legs in a second round clash.

West Ham are 20/1 to win the Carling Cup. See the whole Carling Cup winners betting market.
