Collins suggests only a miracle will help Wales in qualification
Published:James Collins has conceded defeat in Wales’ attempts to qualify for Euro 2012, suggesting that his side need a “miracle” to qualify.
Wales head to Switzerland on Tuesday after back-to-back defeats against Montenegro and Bulgaria, but even a win would struggle to boost Wales’ confidence to qualify.
Wales are 13/2 to win in Switzerland with the hosts, odds on at 4/9, to beat their Welsh counterparts.
England beat Switzerland 3-1 at home in their Group G qualifier and it would take a performance of that magnitude for the Welsh fans to find a renewed optimism – Wales are 80/1 to win 3-1.
“Miracles are needed to if we are to get second place in this group,” said defender Collins.
“And we can’t expect to qualify after losing our first two qualifiers.”
Montenegro are currently top of Group G with maximum points from their first three games and are 10/1 to top the group.
But they face England on Tuesday and are 14/1 to win which would suggest England will join Montenegro at the top of Group G come Wednesday morning.
England are huge favourites at 1/8 to top Group G after two wins from two games, but the away tie against Montenegro could be crucial after the fifth seeds strong start to the campaign.
Switzerland join Wales at the bottom of the group with both teams yet to pick up a point in the campaign, and the Swiss need three points against Wales if they are to start justifying their second seed rating.
The win against Wales leaves Bulgaria, 14/1 to top Group G, with just the one win from their opening three games and face the day off on Tuesday.
Switzerland will hope to take advantage of Bulgaria’s week off and a potential Montenegro loss, and are 12/1 to top Group G.
