Dons indicate O’Driscoll will have funds for new striker

| 27.10.2010

Doncaster suffered a huge blow when record signing Billy Sharp was ruled out for six weeks with injury, but they will be able to afford a replacement, according to their chairman.

Sharp cost Doncaster a club record £1.15 million last summer and has scored six goals so far this campaign in 13 appearances, making him one of the favourites to be the Championship’s top scorer at 25/1.

He joined Doncaster on loan last season after a failed spell at Sheffield United, but will have not enjoyed his outing against his former club as he left the Keepmoat with a torn hamstring.

The injury will keep Sharp out for six weeks and leaves Doncaster short up front, with experienced striker Stephen Brooker still out with an abductor injury.

Dons chairman John Ryan has good news for fans though, as he’s indicated there are funds available for manager Sean O’Driscoll to sign a replacement.

“It won’t be financial restrictions, it will be more the fact can he find the right player to come and play for us,” Ryan said.

The hunt for a new striker was confirmed by Dons assistant manager Richard O’Kelly, who added: “At the moment we are looking to try and bring someone in if we possibly can. We play various systems so we want someone who is versatile.

O’Kelly also told reporters that the club were keen to bring someone in as soon as possible.

“We would like to get someone in before Saturday but, then again, the side that finished against Sheffield United would be more than adequate for what we want to do,” he concluded.

Doncaster visit inconsistent Reading this weekend and will not be too hopeful of coming back with anything.

Reading thumped Burnley 4-0 last time out and the Dons only have one win away from home all season.

This makes the Royals 4/5 favourites for the win, with Donny 7/2.
