Garcia heads Castello Masters betting in long awaited comeback
Published:Sergio Garcia hasn’t competed in a tournament since finishing 88th in the final major of the season, but his role as vice-captain in the European Ryder Cup team has inspired the Spaniard to return to playing ways.
The last two seasons have been an arduous struggle for Garcia, his last win on tour came in 2008 at the HSBC Champions and his best finish since then has been fourth place in two tournaments.
But Garcia returns to the scene of one of those fourth placed finishes when he heads to Valencia for the Castello Masters, where he is the 12/1 favourite to win the title.
The reason for his favouritism, despite his awful form, is Garcia’s renewed interest in golf after not being a part of the playing staff at the Ryder Cup.
Garcia is Europe’s most iconic Ryder Cup star since Seve Ballesteros, and missing out on the side that played at the Celtic Manor has inspired Garcia to fall back in love with golf.
The Spaniard will be doing everything he can between now and 2012 to regain his spot on the Ryder Cup team, starting this week in his home country.
A partisan crowd and Garcia’s ability means he should walk away with the title should he play at his best – but the question marks surrounding his form mean backing others holds the value.
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano finished runner-up last week, carding four sub-70 rounds and is playing on home soil – the Spaniard is 20/1 to win in Valencia.
Christian Nilsson finished third here last year and played some incredible golf when finishing second behind Matin Kaymer at the KLM open – he is 80/1 to win.
