Martin Kaymer favourite to win an incredible fourth title in a row
Published:The PGA Grand Slam of Golf was set-up by the PGA Tour to establish a ‘champion of champions’, but this year’s tournament has been weakened by the withdrawal’s of two of this year’s major winners.
Louis Oosthuizen was forced to withdraw from the tournament because of an ankle injury and will be replaced by American David Toms.
But Phil Mickelson has decided not to play in the tournament, and South African Ernie Els will take the place of the Masters champion.
Mickelson’s decision to withdraw has devalued the competition but it won’t worry the four professionals competing for a share of the $1.25m prize fund.
With three tournament wins in his last three tournament starts, it’s safe to say Martin Kaymer is the form player heading into the two day event which starts on Tuesday.
The German is the 6/4 favourite to win the competition ahead of Graeme McDowell and Ernie Els, both 5/2, and David Toms, 5/1.
The 43-year-old Toms is the big outsider and hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since January 2006, but finished third in the McGladrey Classic nine days ago, however that field didn’t contain the same standard of player this field does.
Els has been in tremendous form and currently sits 5th in the Race to Dubai and can’t be ruled out of the betting, whilst McDowell has played little since winning the Ryder Cup with Europe but proved his winning temperament when winning the final match in the Ryder Cup.
However, Kaymer is the stand-out player in the field as he targets the world number one spot and at 6/4, is a very backable price to win at the Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda.
