Newcastle vs Sunderland – Visitors come in with the edge
Sunderland may not have the greatest track record against local rivals Newcastle, but there are reasons for fans to be cheerful ahead of their meeting at St James’ Park this season.
Sunderland have not won at St James’ Park since 2000, while they have won just three of the last 16 Premier League meetings between the two home and away.
However, with boss Steve Bruce readying himself for his first Tyne-Wear derby, there are some positives for him to look at.
Sunderland took four points off Newcastle in the last season they were in the Premier League together two years ago.
Meanwhile, they may have turned a corner as their recent win over Aston Villa was the first time in 14 months that they had managed to win a game without Darren Bent finding the target.
Sunderland are 23/10 to beat Newcastle and gain a first away victory of the campaign.
A triumph for Newcastle would represent their 250th win in the Premier League and they are 6/5 to beat Sunderland and end their seven-game unbeaten run.
To Score At Any Time
Although Andy Carroll is Newcastle’s top Premier League scorer so far this season with five goals, history suggests that strike partner Shola Ameobi is more likely to find the target against Sunderland.
Ameobi has scored four goals in his last three matches with the Black Cats and is 7/4 to strike within the 90 minutes this season.
Carroll has only scored in one game at St James’ Park so far but that was a hat-trick against Villa and he is 6/5 to net against Sunderland.
Darren Bent is the obvious scoring candidate for Bruce’s side and he is also 6/5 to add an eighth goal to his impressive tally.
