Owen content at Man Utd and only has eyes for Premier League

Injury-hit Michael Owen has said he has no intention of finding a lower league club if his Manchester United contract isn’t renewed this season.

Owen has only started once for United this season and was ruled out for a month this week with a hamstring injury.

The former Liverpool man has made it clear though he would like to remain at Old Trafford next season.

“I would honestly love to stay but you will have to ask the manager about the long term,” Owen said.

The striker has also rubbished rumours he’s unhappy and is looking for a way out of the club in January.

“Honestly, I’ve loved it here. I signed a two-year contract, I’m only 60 per cent into that and hopefully we will talk [about extending it] before the end of the season,” he added.

Owen also said that he had no desire to join a struggling Premier League club or pursue a career in the lower leagues.

“I won’t drop down the leagues and whether I would even want to drop down to a poorer Premier League team … I don’t know.

“Yes, I could score goals, but I would probably get less opportunities and less enjoyment,” he explained.

Owen is also realistic about his chances of first team regularity and seems content to enjoy just being at United.

“I think I’d rather play less and train with top players, rather than playing every minute of every game, getting three or four touches and not enjoying it.”

Manchester United will be without both Owen and Wayne Rooney this weekend as they host Spurs, but they will be able to call on Dimitar Berbatov and a red hot Javier Hernandez.

Both Berbatov and Hernandez are 1/1 to score at any time, with Spurs hotshot Rafael Van Der Vaart rated 3/1.

Spurs haven’t beaten Manchester United in a decade and at 9/2 will need to be at their best to change this.

United are a solid 8/13 with a draw at 11/4.
