Reja erring on side of caution as Lazio extend Serie A advantage

Lazio coach Edy Reja is refusing to be drawn into whether his side are serious title challengers until at least the first half of the Serie A season has been completed.

A strong defensive record had helped Lazio move to the head of the Serie A standings and they extended their lead at the top to four points with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Cagliari.

This has seen them become 28/1 to win Serie A after winning six of their first eight games of the season and avoiding defeat since the opening day.

Their strong start has drawn comparisons to the 1984/85 Serie A season when Verona were the shock winners of the division and claimed their only top-flight title.

However, Reja continues to remain cautious about his team’s overall prospects for the season and is not getting carried away in terms of what can be achieved.

He told Radio Anch’io lo Sport: “The Scudetto is something which doesn’t regard us. We are taking advantage of the moment and we are a top six side.

“We are always growing, the team has great enthusiasm and we fight with courage. The players always help each other out and this is why big results arrive.

“But it’s too early to make great comparisons. We have to wait until the end of the first half of season.”

Inter Milan remain second in the table despite only managing to draw at home to Sampdoria, but midfielder Esteban Cambiasso is not too concerned that they are in too much danger of slipping off the pace.

Cambiasso revealed that Inter “do not fear” Lazio and that there is still plenty of time to close the gap on the surprise table toppers.

Inter have drifted to 6/5 to win Serie A for the sixth campaign in a row. See the full Serie A winners betting odds market.
