Phil Taylor is there for the taking at World Darts Championship

| 22.11.2010

Phil Taylor may be the 8/15 favourite to win the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship, but ‘The Power’ is looking more fallible than ever.

He crashed out of the Daily Mirror Grand Slam of darts to Steve Beaton 16-14 at the quarter-final stage, despite leading the 80/1 World Darts Championship outsider 14-11.

Taylor has been having increasing problems with his vision in recent months and resorted to wearing glasses for the start of the tournament.

They didn’t seem to cause him any problems in his opening 5-1 win against Michael van Gerwen, but he decided to ditch them for the remainder of the tournament following his defeat to Stoke rival Ted Hankey in his second clash.

Taylor is now rumoured to be considering laser surgery to correct his vision ahead of his assault on the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championships next month – hardly ideal in a sport where the tiniest change can mean the difference between glory or defeat.

Taylor had won the Grand Slam of Darts every year since its creation in 2007. However, two defeats in this year’s competition – against players who had won just two of their combined 18 previous meetings with Taylor – suggests his air of invincibility is waning.

So, who can take his crown? James Wade may have lost in the final to BDO player Scott Waites – despite leading 8-0 at one stage – but his impressive run to the final, combined his World Grand Prix victory last month, means he is in the perfect position at 8/1 to take advantage of Taylor’s dip in form and win his first world title.
