Arsenal in to 4/5 to end trophyless run and win Carling Cup
Published:Arsenal have gone odds-on in their quest to win the Carling Cup and end a six-year wait to capture a significant trophy of any kind.
Arsene Wenger’s team have not lifted any silverware since moving to the Emirates, but have now shortened to 4/5 win the Carling Cup after reaching the semi finals of the competition with a comfortable win over Wigan.
The Gunners have had no trouble reaching the latter stages of the Carling Cup in recent seasons as this is the eighth campaign in succession that they have made at least the quarter finals.
However, this is the first time in three years that Arsenal have successfully negotiated the hurdle of the last eight and they will now fancy their chances of going all the way in the competition.
With West Ham knocking Manchester United out of the competition, it cannot really be argued that Wenger’s team are the best left in the competition and on paper should have no troubles seeing off any of the five sides still in contention.
Should they draw West Ham in the semi-finals, Arsenal should be confident as they have not lost in eight games against the Hammers and have won the last three.
Meanwhile, there is also the chance they could draw the winners of the remaining quarter finals, which pit Birmingham against Aston Villa and Ipswich against West Brom.
Arsenal are currently enjoying a seven-game unbeaten streak against Birmingham, while they have lost just once in their last 24 showdowns with last season’s beaten Carling Cup finalists Aston Villa.
West Brom may pose the biggest challenge as they have already beaten Arsenal this season in the Premier League, although they had lost five on a row against Arsenal before this.
Ipswich are harder to judge as they have not played Arsenal since 2002, but the Gunners should have no trouble seeing off Championship opposition.
