Hodgson believes he is doing as much as possible at Liverpool
Published:Roy Hodgson believes that it would not be in Liverpool’s interests to sack him as boss as any new manager brought in would have the same problems to encounter.
Despite pre-season beliefs that Liverpool could challenge for the Premier League title under Hodgson’s guidance this season, this optimism soon vanished as the club found itself in the relegation places in October.
Some improvements of late have seen them climb to ninth in the standings, but Liverpool’s betting odds to win the Premier League remain at 100/1, as they have 12 points to find on current table-toppers Manchester United.
However, Hodgson feels that he will struggle to make any widespread improvement unless the club’s new owner New England Sports Ventures make some money available to bring in some new faces.
Hodgson said: “Whoever takes my place will be in a similar job with similar players. [That would remain so] unless there is a major inflow of cash into the club and the team is going to be changed from one moment to the next.
“It doesn’t bother me because I can’t do more than I am doing, I can’t work harder, I can’t work better. I have great confidence in my ability, I don’t think there is any reason not to have.”
Sochaux attacker Ryad Boudebouz is one player that Hodgson is potentially looking to sign to strengthen his squad in January, while he has also been linked with Basel’s Valentin Stocker and Bolton’s Johan Elmander.
It is Liverpool’s away form that has been the root of their problems this season, as they have won just one of their nine games on their travels.
Perhaps luckily for Hodgson then, his next game is at Anfield, although it is against his former club Fulham.
Liverpool are 1/2 to beat Fulham, with the visitors failing to score on each of their last four trips to Anfield.
