Man Utd v Sunderland – Fergie’s men won’t slip up

| 24.12.2010

Sunderland may be flying high in the league, but their good run looks certain to come to an end at Old Trafford this Boxing Day.

The Black Cats are 11/1 to inflict a surprise defeat on United, but with no win in the league against Sir Alex Ferguson’s side since March 1997, it’s hard to see them coming away with anything this time around.

United’s last league defeat came in a 2-1 loss against Chelsea in April. Since then the table-toppers have gone 21 Premier League matches without tasting defeat.

However, Sunderland will provide a stern test. They produced a gritty performance against an in-form Bolton side last weekend to come away with a 1-0 win thanks to a goal from United loan player Danny Welbeck.

Because of the loan rules, the 20-year-old is ineligible to play for Sunderland in this game, and he will be a huge loss after hitting five goals already this season.

United’s assent to the top of the Premier League has been built on consistency rather than brilliance and they should pick up another three points in this clash.

This will be no walkover though. Sunderland haven’t conceded a goal in their last three games and with United struggling to find the net with any regularity (their 7-1 thumping of Blackburn excepted) this looks set to be a close encounter.

Back United to win at 1/4 and a 2-0 win at 5/1.

A £10 bet on Sunderland to be winning at half-time with a full-time United victory pays out £280. New Ladbrokes customers can sign up here for a free £10 bet.
