Modric the number one target on Chelsea’s shopping list

Although a new striker should perhaps be the top priority of Chelsea in the transfer market, it is Luka Modric who is reportedly number one on Carlo Ancelotti’s hit list.

Chelsea may have only scored four goals in their last seven league games, but this could also be blamed on a lack of midfield creativity, alongside the lack of potency of their strikers.

Therefore, Modric could be the missing piece of the jigsaw alongside Michael Essien and Frank Lampard in the centre of the midfield and help Chelsea defy Premier League betting odds of 15/8 to win the title.

Dinamo Zagreb vice-president Zdravko Mamic, who is a close friend of Modric, has leaked the news over Chelsea’s interest, but it could be end of the season, and not in January, when Ancelotti formally makes an offer.

According to the Sun, Mamic said: “I was with Ancelotti for lunch. I was very proud when I heard what he said about Modric. Luka is top of his list, his first pick when it comes to new signings.

“I don’t want to say anything more because I don’t want to upset my friends at Tottenham.”

However, if a deal was pushed through in January, it could be detrimental to Tottenham’s title aspirations, particularly if they are unable to find a suitable replacement in the transfer market.

Tottenham are just four points behind Chelsea in the Premier League table, which leaves them seven points adrift of table toppers Manchester United.

Spurs’ betting odds are 33/1 to win the Premier League at present, although their main goal will be to repeat their performance of last season when finishing fourth in the last of the Champions League qualification places.
