Napoli not thinking about mounting a Serie A title challenge

Napoli may be flying high in third spot in the Serie A standings, but goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis insists the club are not getting ahead of themselves and contemplating winning a first title since 1990.

Five wins in seven games have seen Napoli move to within six points of leaders AC Milan and this has also seen their Serie A betting odds cut to 20/1.

Walter Mazzarri’s team have shown title winning form of late, winning their last two Serie A games 1-0 and they will be content with the same scoreline again when they host Lecce next.

However, De Sanctis refused to accept that Napoli are Milan’s chief title rivals this season and the club are avoiding looking too far into the future.

He told Sky: “It is true that we are going through a good period of form, but we are not speaking about the Scudetto or being the rivals to Milan.

“Compared to us, there are many other teams that are more qualified to claim the title such as Inter and Juventus. We just keep on going forward every week, playing each match.”

Milan are the current Serie A title favourites at 8/11, while Juventus and Lazio are also in the chasing pack with Napoli attempting to make up the six-point deficit.

Mazzarri’s team will be hoping to bridge this gap against Lecce and they have a good record against the opposition in their previous meetings.

Napoli have won their last two home meetings with Lecce without conceding a goal, while they comfortably recorded a 3-0 success during the most recent of these in 2008.

Meanwhile, Lecce have failed to win away from home in Serie A this season, while their draw at Palermo in September represents their only point in their eight games on their travels.
