Wolves v Wigan – McCarthy’s men will climb out of drop zone
Perhaps the most important game of Boxing Day takes place at Molineux between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic.
Both sides are mired in the relegation zone following dismal seasons so far, but a victory for either side would almost certainly lift them to safety – for the time being at least.
Wolves are at 11/10 to come away with a win and that certainly looks like the most likely outcome based on the two side’s recent form.
Wigan have won just one of their last nine Premier League games and have won just two of their last 22 on the road. One of those victories came in this fixture last year, with the Latics coming out on top thanks to a 2-0 win.
However, it’s hard to see Wigan repeating the trick this time around – despite picking up draws in their last two league games.
Wolves have won two of their last three games to put themselves within touching distance of safety. Despite their lowly league position, Wolves have a very decent home record, losing just three of their last 13 games at Molineux.
They have beaten Manchester City, Sunderland and Birmingham in that run and Mick McCarthy has this week been given the full backing of chief executive Jez Moxey, who expressed his disbelief at events at Blackburn and Newcastle.
Wolves should certainly be able to see off a Wigan side with just one win in their last nine games.
Backing Wolves to come out on top at 10/11 to make it a very merry Christmas for Mick McCarthy looks to be well worth a bet.
