Burden on Drogba as Chelsea’s Torres bid is rejected

Didier Drogba will still need to do the brunt of the scoring if Chelsea are to win the Premier League it seems as Carlo Ancelotti’s bid for Liverpool’s Fernando Torres has been rejected.

Chelsea’s betting odds are currently 7/1 to take the title and successive victories to end a miserable run have seen them stay within ten points of Manchester United.

Owner Roman Abramovich appears aware that he needs to invest in new players to stand a chance of closing this gap and Torres and Benfica’s David Luiz seem to be the big names on his shopping list.

However, agreeing asking prices are proving a problem with both of the other clubs involved, with Liverpool rejecting £35m for their Spanish striker.

Whether an increased offer will be submitted remains to be seen, but if Chelsea fail to sign a new striker in the January transfer window then the pressure will once again fall on their shoulders of Drogba to rediscover his scoring touch of old.

Drogba’s recent goal in the demolition of Bolton was just his third in the Premier League since the start of October and his tally of nine for the season is ten adrift of current leading scorer Dimitar Berbatov.

Meanwhile, he is a long way short of replicating the 29 goals he fired last season to help Chelsea win the Premier League by a single point.

The capture of Torres in theory would help share scoring duties more evenly, particularly as he has shown signs of ending his own scoring troubles of late.

Like Drogba, Torres has nine league goals this season, including three in the four games since Kenny Dalglish took over as Liverpool manager.

A £25 stake on Chelsea winning the Premier League would return £175. New customers can sign up here for a free £25 bet.
