Charlton sack Parkinson as they seek League One promotion

| 04.01.2011

Charlton have decided that Phil Parkinson is not the man to lead them to League One promotion this season and are now searching for a new boss.

The news may shock some as Charlton sit in fifth spot in the standings and are still worthy contenders in the League One odds to win the title at 14/1.

However, the 4-2 home defeat against Swindon has proved the final straw for the board as they look for a new manager to attempt to bridge the nine-point gap on current table-toppers Brighton.

Charlton chairman Michael Slater has not been impressed with recent performances, with the club having not won a game since defeating Yeovil towards the end of November.

Although the loss against Swindon was only their second defeat in ten League One games.

Slater said: “Change is required now while we are still in the hunt for promotion. We must appoint a new manager now to give us every chance of going up.”

Assistant boss Tim Breacker and first-team coach Mark Kinsella have also left the club with immediate effect, with Charlton still to announce who will take over in a caretaker capacity until a new manager is named.

Dennis Wise is one of the early names to be touted with the vacancy, as he is known to be one of the friends of Tony Jimenez, who is on the board following his involvement in the recent takeover of the club.

Charlton have a break from league action next as they travel across London for an FA Cup third round tie at Tottenham before they head to another of the League One promotion contenders in Sheffield Wednesday.

A £10 bet on Charlton beating winning the League One title could see a return of £140. New Ladbrokes customers can sign up here for a free £10 bet.
