Pienaar signing won’t change Tottenham’s title chances

| 18.01.2011

Steven Pienaar finally looks set to get his move to Tottenham Hotspur after almost a year of speculation.

According to the Sun, Harry Redknapp is thought to have matched Chelsea’s bid of £3 million as the club’s coffers look set to get filled because of a sell-on clause in Darren Bent’s contract.

The White Hart Lane side are currently 33/1 to win the Premier League but Pienaar’s signing will make very little difference to Spurs’ title credentials. It’s hard to see where Pienaar would fit into a Spurs side that is hardly short of midfield talent – especially on the wings.

Aaron Lennon has been in decent form this season and gave Patrice Evra a horrible time at the weekend, while Gareth Bale has blossomed into one of the hottest properties in world football.

Redknapp has admitted that Niko Kranjčar looks set to leave sooner rather than later as the Croatian has failed to get regular football following the emergence of Bale. Pienaar looks likely to fill the bench-warming role of the exiting midfielder.

Spurs take on Newcastle United this weekend at St James’ Park and are currently 5/4 favourites in the Ladbrokes Premier League betting.

It will be a tough trip for Spurs though, with the Magpies losing just two of their last eight on home soil. However, Spurs have only tasted defeat once in their previous 14 games and have kept four clean sheets in their last five games.

Backing the defensively sound Spurs to come through this at 5/4 certainly looks well worth a bet.

A £25 stake on Newcastle beating Spurs 3-0 would return £575. New customers can sign up here for a free £25 bet.
