Spurs head the queue to sign teenager Wickham

Connor Wickham has become hot property in the past year and it appears that Tottenham are at the head of the queue to sign Ipswich’s sought-after teenage striker.

A number of Premier League clubs are circling for the boy wonder, with Liverpool and Arsenal also thought to be interested in Wickham, who will turn 18 next month.

However, it is Arsenal’s North London rivals Spurs that appear to be winning the race as it is believed they have a deal in place that allows them first refusal.

It is rumoured that it will take £15m to lure Wickham away from Ipswich, with his stock having risen following a hat-trick in Ipswich’s recent demolition of Doncaster.

Wickham only recently extended his deal to remain at Portman Road until 2013, but this new contract is likely to have featured a buy-out clause.

Ipswich boss Paul Jewell said: “He can go all the way, but he still needs to improve in a lot of areas and he knows that himself.

“He is quick, strong and has all the tools to be a top player. He is a very nice lad, if a bit too laid-back at times. I’d like to see him be a bit more aggressive.”

Tottenham could arguably do with another option in attack if they want to enhance their chances of consistently breaking into the top four.

Roman Pavyluchenko is their top-scoring striker in the Premier League with just five goals, as the club have relied heavily on Rafael Van der Vaart and Gareth Bale to chip in from midfield.

Tottenham are 50/1 in the Premier League betting to win the title this season, but have ten points to make up on Manchester United across the final 12 games of the campaign.
