Arsenal target World Cup winner to solve goalkeeping problems

It’s the position that many feel holds the key to Arsenal winning a major trophy and Gianluigi Buffon would certainly bring the nous required at the heart of the Arsenal defence.

Manuel Almunia’s latest mishap has left Arsene Wenger considering his goalkeeping options and while Jens Lehman may be a short term fix, Buffon would be an ideal solution to the Arsenal goalkeeping conundrum.

The Italian captain would be an ideal leader in the Arsenal dressing room and with two Serie A titles to his name, a Coppa Italia winner’s medal, UEFA Cup winner’s medal and a World Cup winner’s medal, Buffon knows how to win major trophies.

Arsenal are still in the hunt for the Premier League title and they are 11/4 in the football betting to pip Manchester United and Chelsea to the post.

But after crashing out of three tournaments in a fortnight, there are questions marks surrounding the mentality of the Arsenal squad.

Buffon would be an asset to Wenger and after Juventus offered him a new contract which would mean he would have to take a 50 per cent pay cut, the door is ajar in the race to sign the man who has been at Juventus for the past nine seasons.

The Italian press are full of speculation surrounding Buffon’s future, and the player who was once dead set on staying at Juventus for the rest of his career is now starting to look at his options.

Juventus are struggling in Serie A currently and it’s looking more and more likely that Luigi Del Neri’s side will fail to qualify for Europe.

Buffon’s stance as a staunch bianconeri has slipped recently and the world cup winner could be on his way to the Premier League.
