Brighton close to League One title – but don’t write off the Saints

| 20.03.2011

Brighton boss Gus Poyet is convinced his side have what it takes to secure the League One title after their gutsy 1-0 win away to Oldham on Saturday.

The Seagulls came through their tricky test thanks to a Second-half Ashley Barnes strike which put them seven points clear of Huddersfield in second place who have played three games more.

Brighton are currently priced at 1/7 to win the League One title and Poyet believes his side are showing all the qualities needed to complete the job.

He said: “We did it with courage and spirit and we showed what you need to become champions. We are trying to keep a run going and we didn’t start brightly but we have a squad and made changes.

“Gary Dicker came on in the second half, made the whole team play football and we needed that to improve us. Our back four and keeper were outstanding and if you defend like that you keep clean sheets and win games.”

Meanwhile, Southampton – who are ten points behind Brighton – were convincing in their 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday and are currently second favourites for the League One title at 4/1.

Huddersfield currently occupy the second spot, but have played more games than the teams around them and were held to a goalless draw by struggling Swindon on Saturday.

The Terriers are a 33/1 long shot to win the league and promotion to the Championship.
