Misty For Me is O’Brien’s best 1000 Guineas hope
Aidan O’Brien is set to launch a three-pronged attack on the 1000 Guineas this year in an attempt to improve on a dreadful record in the Group One showpiece.
Despite his array of victories in major races around the world, O’Brien has struggled in the fillies’ Classic, with Virginia Water his only winner in 2005.
Meanwhile, he has only ever saddled two other horses to make the frame and one of these was his first back in 1998 when Shahtoush chased home Cape Verdi.
In total, O’Brien has entered 19 fillies into the 1000 Guineas and a further three will arrive at Newmarket his year.
Perhaps his best chance lies with Misty For Me, who is currently 8/1 in the 1000 Guineas odds and already has two Group One victories under her belt last season.
Misty For Me likes to run up with the pace and should have no ground issues as she has previously won on both firm and soft surfaces.
Together is considered a 25/1 chance and based on her recent form, she is likely to find one or two of the field to be too strong.
The horse is without a victory in her last six starts, but could represent good each-way value as she is liable to be running on from the rear towards the finish and has no stamina issues over the 1m trip.
Finally, Empowering is 33/1 in the 1000 Guineas betting and will be taking a massive step up in class at Newmarket.
She did win her only previous start in Group company when landing a 1000 Guineas trial at Leopardstown on her latest run, but it remains to be seen if she has the class to compete at this level.
A £30 stake on Misty For Me winning the 1000 Guineas would return £240. New customers can sign up here for a free £30 bet.
