Man City involved in big race for South American

| 24.06.2011

Manchester City will have to beat off the challenge of six or seven other clubs across Europe if they are to secure the signature of Javier Pastore.

Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini has indicated that although he is still waiting to receive an offer for the Argentine playmaker, he knows that numerous clubs are keeping tabs on any developments.

It may take one club to make the first move before the rest follow, as all of the interested parties may be unwilling to show their hand in the race for the £45m-rated midfielder.

However, Zamparini has revealed that a move to England or Spain is most likely for Pastore, while hinting that Manchester City and Malaga are two of the clubs monitoring the situation.

Zamparini said: “I spoke with his agent on Wednesday and there are six or seven clubs on him, a couple have backing from the sheikhs.

“He is destined for a great team and in the end I think he will head to England or Spain.”

Manchester City are 7/2 in the Premier League odds to win the title next season and the capture of Pastore would add some valuable creativity in the middle of the park.

But Manchester City may have to offload some off their current unwanted high earners before they can bring in any new faces.

Players including Emmanuel Adebayor, Wayne Bridge, Craig Bellamy and Shaun Wright-Phillips are all available to leave, but Manchester City are struggling to find buyers who will pay their transfer costs and also meet their extortionate wage demands.

Manchester City may be forced into paying a percentage of the salary of these players, even after they have left Eastlands, if they want to get them off their books.
