Man City not helping themselves in efforts to sell Adebayor
Published:Manchester City have called on Europe’s top clubs to consider Emmanuel Adebayor before finalising any plans to bring in a new striker this summer.
Roberto Mancini’s squad are not shy on forwards, with Carlos Tevez, Mario Balotelli, Edin Dzeko and Jo already in the ranks, while Sergio Aguero, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Alexis Sanchez have all been linked with a future move to Eastlands.
Adebayor does not appear to have much of a future at Manchester City, despite scoring eight goals in 22 appearances when on loan at Real Madrid during the second half of last season.
Manchester City are 7/2 in the Premier League odds to win the title next season and Adebayor certainly has the physical characteristics to be a valuable squad member.
The main problem for Manchester City is that although they appear desperate to get Adebayor off their wage bill, they are refusing to budge from their £14m asking price, particularly after paying around £25m to sign him from Arsenal.
Real Madrid have already stated that they are unprepared to pay more than £8m for Adebayor and other clubs may have difficulty meeting his wage demands, which are in the region of £160,000 a week.
Taking a pay cut would open up more possibilities for the striker and his agent Phil Smith feels that both Adebayor and Manchester City will have to work in tandem to orchestrate a deal that will suit both parties.
Smith said: “I’m not sure if he is going to go back to Real Madrid but he is certainly in demand and he’s earning a lot of money.
“He’s got a reputation for being able to play in Europe, he will appeal to various managers. It’s a difficult deal to put together but the onus will certainly be on Manchester City to some degree.
“It’s a difficult equation to make and the player will have some decisions to make as well.”
There are potentially options open to Adebayor in England as Tottenham are known to be seeking a striker, while QPR certainly have the funds to be able to entice the 27-year-old to return to London.
