Only a Murray Wimbledon win can stop McIlroy claiming SPOTY
Published:Rory McIlroy is now the overwhelming favourite to scoop the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award – but there is one man who can stop him.
McIlroy may be odds-on at 5/6 to win the award but a Wimbledon win for Andy Murray would surely see the Scot walk away with the prize.
Murray began his Wimbledon campaign with an ultimately convincing win against Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the first round yesterday. The world No.4 eventually came through to win 4-6 6-3 6-0 6-0.
Murray is currently 4/1 to win the SPOTY award and 5/1 to claim his maiden Grand Slam victory at Wimbledon.
McIlroy is following in the footsteps of compatriot Graeme McDowell who won the US Open last year and was also favourite to win the SPOTY award following his triumph at Pebble Beach.
However, McDowell eventually lost out to Grand National winning jockey Tony McCoy so it is by no means a guarantee that McIlroy will win the award and Murray could certainly overtake him with a win at SW19.
Third favourite to win the SPOTY award is David Haye whose chances of winning the award are dependent on him defeating Wladimir Klitschko next month. The boxer can be backed at 7/1 to win.
McIlroy is the only person who has a major title in the bag so far though so backing the likeable golfer at 5/6 looks like the most sensible if not the most exciting bet.
