Broad’s heroics won’t save England from India defeat

| 30.07.2011

Stuart Broad has admitted India are now favourites for second test at Trent bridge – despite his swashbuckling 64 runs from 66 balls yesterday.

India looked to have got through the England batting with the home side limping to 88 for six. However, Broad restored some pride and England’s chances with his brilliant batting display.

Despite his display with the bat, India are very much in the driving seat – something Broad is all too aware of.

He said: “After being 100 for six we were delighted to finish on 221.

“At tea it was India’s day 100 per cent, so we’re delighted to wrestle our way back into the game. It’s been a hard fight but it’s been exciting as well.

“India will be the happier of the two camps. It was a good toss to win and I thought India won three-quarters of the day.

“You can’t blame too many of our batsmen for throwing away their wickets. I thought there were some good deliveries in there.

“We had a little chat at tea and thought we had to grab the momentum back. And that was by Swanny and myself playing our natural game and looking to hit the ball if it was in our area.”

With an overcast day predicted in Nottingham, there will plenty of opportunity for the England attack to get the ball moving and test India.

However, the world’s No.1 test side have given very little away cheaply so far this series and should build a commanding lead.

Backing India to win the second test at 8/11 should produce a tidy pay out.
