David Toms is where smart money is at Wyndham Championship

David Toms heads into the Wyndham Championship as the big 12/1 favourite – and it’s hard to look beyond the 2001 USPGA Champion for the title.

Toms has been in good form this year and bounced back from a play-off defeat at the Players Championship to win the Colonial – his first victory on the PGA Tour in five years.

He was also brilliant in his final two rounds at the USPGA Championship last week, finishing with a 65 and a 67 to end in a tie for fourth at the Atlanta Athletic Club.

An each-way bet on Toms at 12/1 to win in Greensboro looks a good way of bagging a tidy profit.

However, there are plenty of other golfers in the field who can challenge – not least Jim Furyk who can be backed at 40/1.

Last season’s FedEX Cup playoff champion has had a disappointing year but showed flashes of his brilliance in the USPGA before posting a poor final round 75.

Despite his problems, Furyk’s game is coming together and is worth considering at such long odds in a less than inspiring field.

Elsewhere, USPGA play-off loser Jason Dufner will head into the tournament high on confidence after dominating the year’s fourth major for 68 holes.

Three bogies in the final four holes might have cost him the title, but he was striking the ball brilliantly and can’t be discounted at 50/1.

Webb Simpson has had another solid year on the PGA Tour, winning nearly $3million and is knocking on the door of a maiden victory. He’s second favourite at 20/1.
