Brighton v Liverpool: Gerrard set for tough return on south coast

Published:

The honeymoon is well and truly over for Kenny Dalglish at Liverpool.

After defeats in their previous two Premier League games against Stoke City and Tottenham Hotspur, Dalglish will be looking for a reaction against Gus Poyet’s side on Wednesday evening.

Steven Gerrard could be in line to make his long-awaited return from injury and he will need to be up to speed quickly if the Reds are to progress…

Match odds

Brighton head into this game on the back of a 1-0 loss against Leicester City at the weekend – their first defeat of the new season.

They remain undefeated at the Falmer Stadium though and saw off Premier League outfit Sunderland in the last round of the Carling Cup.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have lost their last two away games and failed to find the net in both defeats against Stoke and Spurs.

The Reds crashed out of the Carling Cup against League Two side Northampton Town at the same stage last season and Brighton can be backed at 11/4 to produce another shock this evening.

Goal markets

The sides have not met since 1991 when Brighton forced a draw at Anfield in the FA Cup before eventually losing 3-2 in the replay.

There have always been plenty of goals in this fixture over the years though.

Only two of their previous 11 encounters have seen less than three goals scored and over 2.5 goals can be backed at 8/13 in this game.

It’s an especially tempting bet when you consider seven of Liverpool’s last nine Carling Cup games have yielded over 2.5 goals and that Brighton haven’t failed to score in a competitive home game since November last year.
