Dalglish’s Liverpool on the drift after Tottenham horror show

| 19.09.2011

Liverpool may have had two men sent off during their hammering against Tottenham Hotspur, but even with 11 men on the pitch, Kenny Dalglish’s side struggled to keep pace with the impressive Spurs.

The North London team took the lead after just seven minutes thanks to a brilliant strike from Luka Modric.

Spurs were on top for long periods and Charlie Adam’s sending off after half-an-hour didn’t help matters as Modric and Scott Parker took the game to the Reds.

Martin Skrtel was dismissed after an hour for a second bookable offence and then Spurs really cut loose with Jermain Defoe making the points safe and Emmanuel Adebayor bagging a brace on his home debut.

The defeat has seen Liverpool drift to 5/4 to finish in the top four having previously been as short as 8/11 to claim a Champions League spot and 4/6 after their defeat against Stoke last week.

Liverpool have now lost consecutive league games for the second time since Dalglish took over from Roy Hodgson in the Anfield hot seat, following losses against Aston Villa and Spurs in May.

However, while recent games have shown they still have some way to go to be at the level of Manchester United and City, Liverpool still look a decent bet on finish in the top four – especially as they should welcome back skipper Steven Gerrard for their League Cup game against Brighton in the week.

Meanwhile, Spurs have come in to 11/8 to make it back to the European elite after the win and, with Adebayor and Defoe both finding the net, they look set to have the in-form strikers they were missing for so much of last season.
