England vs Wales: Forget the goalfest that everyone is expecting

| 06.09.2011

Gary Speed takes a rejuvenated Wales side to Wembley today in search of a famous victory over England.

Should Fabio Capello’s side lose tonight it’s fair to say that it would be one of the bigger shocks of the night and the bookmakers price England at 1/7 to win.

Speed has a tough task converting the euphoria from Friday night’s win over Montenegro into a performance that is capable of beating England, and with Wales’ last win in London coming back in 1977 it’s fair to say England are bankers tonight.

Match Odds

For those of you who fancy a speculative bet on Wales you can get 14/1 on Speed’s side winning, but Speed’s aim should be to see his side produce a strong performance in defeat and carry that new found belief into a very winnable game at home to Switzerland.

Wales haven’t managed a draw in their last 33 matches and so the draw can be ruled out at 7/1, but a draw at half-time and England win at full-time is priced at 7/2 and it looks a very tempting bet.

The betting would suggest Wales are in for a thumping tonight but it’s been nine games and 31 years since England managed to score more than twice against Wales and they’ve only managed three goals or more in three of the last 22 ties between the two.

Total Goals

Over 2.5 goals is 1/2 but all three games in this millennium between the two have produced under 2.5 goals and it’s a very tempting bet at 6/4.

A 2-0 win for England is available at 5/1 and all three of their wins in this Millennium have seen them keep clean sheets.

There’s no doubt the Welsh side will be fired up for this local derby and that enthusiasm can carry them through until half-time, but England’s class will prevail.

It’s 12/1 that the first goal of the match comes between the minutes 50 and 59.59, and Wayne Rooney is 5/2 to get that first goal.
