Everton may live to rue frustrating transfer window

| 01.09.2011

So deadline day is finally over and Everton are the team who may most rue their failure to get busy in the transfer window earlier in the season.

Everton fans could argue that getting two of their most injury-hit players off their books is reasonably good business.

And they may be right in their assessments that both Mikel Arteta and Yakubu have failed to produce their top form of old since returning from the treatment table.

But with Arsenal interested in Spanish playmaker Arteta for a short while before deadline day, it begs the question why the deal was not completed until the final seconds.

A lack of money meant that David Moyes had been unable to strengthen his squad and was going to have to sell to bring in new faces.

Despite receiving an initial £10m for Arteta, none of this money was reinvested because there simply was not time.

Everton did manage to complete loan swoops for Real Madrid’s Royston Drenthe and exciting Argentine striker Denis Stracqualursi, but they will not realistically be the answer to helping them climb the table into the top six this season.

The deadline-day sale of Jermaine Beckford to Leicester also depletes their squad and leaves Everton heavily reliant on Louis Saha for goals, although his inability to stay fit for any number of games is well known.

Therefore, the season already seems to be over for Everton in September, unless they can embark on a cup adventure of some kind.

Everton’s odds are 16/1 to win the FA Cup this season and 14/1 to triumph in the Carling Cup, which is perhaps the trophy they are most likely to claim.

Alternatively, some people may see Everton as outside contenders to be relegated, which can be backed at 12/1.
